Minimizing our environmental impact

Great River Energy understands our operations impact our environment and it is our responsibility to do all we can to minimize that impact. Great River Energy has always taken great pride in conducting its business with a high concern for the environment. We are committed to conserving resources through environmental stewardship, pollution prevention, waste minimization, recycling and reuse. This dedication is demonstrated by the inclusion of environmental sustainability in our organization’s mission.

To guide employees in their decision-making processes and to ensure environmental considerations are part of the process, we established an environmental policy in 1999, which is reviewed annually and continues to guide our conduct.

We maintain International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 14001 registration for our generation and transmission facilities.

Great River Energy strives to be a good steward of the environment in all areas of its operations as well as in our surrounding communities.

We recognize that our power lines and substations can impact the environment and land use. Read about our tree removal and vegetation management practices, construction and restoration practices and much more.

Each spring we host a family of peregrine falcons atop our Elk River Energy Recovery Station in Elk River, Minnesota. Our Birdcam allows a peek into their world.

In addition to complying with all mandatory reporting requirements, we provide information on emissions – such as greenhouse gases – under various voluntary programs.
