Great River Energy earns bronze-level award for Bicycle Friendly Business

Bicycle friendly amenities for employees earns bronze-level Bicycle Friendly Business award from the League of American Bicyclists

Maple Grove, Minn. – Oct. 7, 2010 – Great River Energy was recognized as a 2010 Fall Bicycle Friendly Business by the League of American Bicyclists and earned the bronze award this fall after the application process was complete in early summer. There was a 45 percent increase in applications this cycle from the last application cycle. Currently, there are 196 awardees in 31 states that span a wide range of industries.

Businesses that apply for the award are contributing to a more bicycle-friendly lifestyle for their employees. Great River Energy serves as an example for best practices and innovations in bicycle friendliness at the workplace. Great River Energy makes biking to work an easy option for transportation and provides amenities such as indoor bike racks, a bike repair station, showers in locker rooms, and incentives such as prizes during company bike-to-work promotions.

Great River Energy is making simple changes to their transportation policies to encourage biking to work. They are setting a community-wide example,” said Andy Clarke, League of American Bicyclists President.

“Businesses across the country, from hospitals to telecommunications firms, are using the [Bicycle Friendly Business] program to measure their bicycle friendliness and to get the tools they need to better promote bicycling,” said Bill Nesper, Director of the Bicycle Friendly America program. “Great River Energy promotes bicycling as a viable form of transportation and gives their employees choices and options that make biking to work easy and fun.”

Companies across the country are realizing that getting their employees biking – either to or from work, in course of work, or even in their own time – is good for business. When bicycling is infused in a company’s culture, great things happen: reduced health care costs; more productive employees; improved worker and customer satisfaction; smaller carbon footprint; and increased corporate social responsibility.
