Great River Energy donates phones to Cornerstone
Elk River, MN (July 19, 2000) - Today, Great River Energy announced it will donate 25 Motorola analog cellular phones and battery chargers to Cornerstone, a family violence prevention program in Bloomington, MN.
The Cornerstone program, founded in 1983, is a community-based non-profit organization whose purpose is to prevent violence and provide comprehensive services to victims of domestic abuse and their children. Cornerstone is collecting cellular phones that still work but no longer carry paid service, for victims to use in emergencies. A cell phone within range of a tower can always call 911, even after the service has been turned off.
The donation was initiated by Great River Energy's Senior Materials Agent, Tony Gully, who said, "This was a timely opportunity for Great River Energy to support the community, and dispose of these analog phones that we can no longer use. It was a co-worker who saw a television piece on Cornerstone and shared the information with me." He also told Cornerstone, " We may have some additional phones in the future, and we will certainly consider Cornerstone as an option for donation."
Every year, Great River Energy makes charitable contributions in cash or materials to dozens of organizations. In 2000, Great River Energy has already contributed more than $125,000 to many different projects in an effort to improve the lives and communities of its customers and employees.
Great River Energy is a not-for-profit generation and transmission cooperative providing electric energy and related services to 29 distribution cooperatives in Minnesota and Wisconsin. It is Minnesota's second largest utility in terms of generation capacity. Great River Energy is a Touchstone Energy cooperative.
