Stanton Station employees celebrate incredible safety milestone

Elk River, MN (December 6, 1999) In November Stanton Station employees marked eight years with no lost-time accidents, according to Stanton Safety and Training Coordinator Melton Olin.

“Eight years is an excellent milestone that all our employees are proud of,” Olin said. “We are all working hard to continue our successful safety record. Keeping employees safe and healthy has always been a priority at Stanton Station.”

With 73 employees at Stanton Station, eight years equals 1,261,941 personnel hours and 70,080 calendar hours worked without a lost-time accident. Great teamwork has gone into maintaining this record.

“I applaud every effort of every employee in reaching this safety record,” said John Pelerine, Stanton’s plant manger. “In an industry such as ours a milestone like this can be very hard to reach. I am personally thankful each day that we return our employees to their families safely.”

Stanton Station has an extensive safety program to train and update employees annually on various hazards at the plant site. Employees attend monthly safety meetings that cover topics such as personal protective equipment, fall protection, respiratory safety and hearing conservation. Employees take a very active role in Stanton’s safety programs.

“We have a safety committee comprised of employees that is continually working toward making the plant a safer environment,” Olin said. “They look for problems and suggest corrections that fit employee needs.”

Stanton Station also has other ways of protecting employees during work. A 10-person rescue squad is trained to help employees in the event of an emergency. The plant also has several employees trained as first responders to aid with injuries if needed.

Stanton Station is owned and operated by Great River Energy, headquartered in Elk River, MN. GRE is a generation and transmission cooperative serving 29 cooperative in Minnesota.
